Dr. Perna’s background reflects a deep commitment to learning and clinical excellence. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts and his dental degree from Northwestern University Dental School, where he was elected to the National Dental Honor Society.
He continued his training with a two-year general practice residency at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, followed by a two-year fellowship at the National Institute of Dental Research in Bethesda, Maryland. He also completed a postgraduate program in implant dentistry at the Misch Implant Institute in Dearborn, Michigan.
With more than 25 years in practice, Dr. Perna has continued to expand his knowledge through ongoing education and leadership within the dental community.
He has completed hundreds of hours of continuing education in implant dentistry, periodontal therapy, and endodontics. This ongoing training supports a well-rounded approach to both routine and complex care.
Dr. Perna founded the Northwest Implant Study Group and remains active in several professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Society, Chicago Dental Society, and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry.
On May 17, 2018, Dr. John Perna earned the distinction of Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry (ABOI/ID), joining a select group of dentists recognized for advanced expertise in implant care. To qualify, he completed years of clinical practice in implant dentistry and demonstrated his experience through detailed case presentations reviewed by an expert panel.
He also successfully passed a series of written and oral examinations that assess clinical knowledge, technical skill, and the ability to provide safe, comprehensive implant treatment. The ABOI/ID, founded in 1969, sets rigorous standards to ensure certified dentists meet a high level of competence in implant dentistry.
Dr. Perna understands that dental care is not one size fits all. His approach is focused on listening first, then building a treatment plan that reflects each patient’s needs, goals, and comfort level.
